Since I began life coaching, every year I use my birthday as an opportunity to check in with myself about my life.
- Am I living the way I want to live?
- Where am I winning?
- Do I have any regrets from the year?
- Where is the gap between where I am and where I want to be?
Why do I do this Birthday Check-In? Because I don’t want to be like the men and women from Bronnie Ware’s book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. I don’t want to be the person who looks back with regret on how I wish I would have lived.
No one sets out to intentionally waste their life. As Socrates says “An unexamined life is not worth living.”
Experience doesn’t make us wiser, EVALUATED experience makes us wiser.
The Birthday Check-in is a series of questions to reflect on where we’ve been and where we want to go from here.
We go to the Dr. at least once a year, and many of us go to the dentist twice a year, but very rarely do we take time for a LIFE CHECK-IN. And yet, how we live in the day to day is vital to our well-being and sense of satisfaction. This is one appointment we must keep with ourselves.
At Leaders Thrive Here we talk about having a “wisdom team” to help us with big decisions. In a way, these questions are a part of that team. It helps us to live wiser and more intentionally.
Consider making this check-in a part of your birthday ritual.
Questions are powerful. They help us organize our thoughts and give us insights into our lives that we aren’t aware of otherwise. The problem is that we struggle to find time to do this deeper work. This is why a birthday is a perfect time to do this exercise – we allow the time because it’s our birthday!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US. This is the gift to give to ourselves.
