Day #18: The Secret to Reclaiming Supper

October 19, 2014

supper

Supper.  I’ve always loved that word.  Way more than dinner.  Dinner is boring.  But SUPPER – that conjures feelings of warm bread, hearty conversation, and lingering moments.  So, I say let’s go back to supper!  I’m going to start calling it that and see if anyone notices….

Let’s get really practical today.  While we know that the gathering around the table is important and a gift, it is just plain hard to get a meal on the table every blessed night!  Am I right???  I know I am, because I’m someone who really enjoys cooking and the kitchen and it’s a challenge for me!  For others who don’t have a bent that way, it’s even more of a challenge.

I’m going to share a secret with you that I just wrote about in my book.  And I promise, you start doing this and it will change everything about the dinner hour… I mean supper hour. 😉

Ready?  Don’t breathe…

Have your supper prepped by 10am.

That’s it!  Truly.

It works for both working parents and stay-at-home parents.  If you are having chicken, get it out of the freezer to thaw.  If you are serving pasta, set it out by the cooktop with a pot of water ready to go on the stove.  I like to wash my greens ahead of time and have them waiting in zip lock bags.

For most parents, the 5 o’clock hour is the worst time to plan.  If you have young children, they are often grumpy and needy this time of day.  If you have older kids, they are often in activities that require carpooling.  Having dinner planned ahead of time alleviates the last minute stress, saves money, and is, most often, a healthier choice than take-out.  You can feel confident knowing that you have a plan for the family when everyone asks, “What’s for dinner?”

Cooking group has personally been my lifesaver.  We get together once every 6-8 weeks and make between 12-15 freezer meals.  It’s the best.  I’m not kidding.  I’m working on a new post for this that I’ll link soon!

For now, just remember… a plan by 10am!

Dare #18:

For one week, have your supper planned by 10am
