A Giveaway & Reclaiming the Table

August 31, 2015

Dinner.Hour.CoverSome of my deepest friendships have been formed around a table.  One was a school cafeteria table that, day after day, hosted my closest childhood friends. Another was a picnic table at one of my favorite camps that hosted hours of conversation with new friends, and another was a deeply worn farm table in a shanty in Central America.

No matter where I’ve been, as long as there has been a table to sit at, significant and life-changing connection has happened.  Why? Because gathering together over a meal or over a cup of coffee or tea causes us to stop whatever else we are doing and focus on one another.

When gathering happens, relationships bloom.

If this is true in friendship, then it is especially important in families, where we have the potential to develop the deepest and most lasting bonds.

While many of us know the importance of family dinners, making it happen most nights is a struggle and challenge.  We screech into the five o’clock hour with grumpy kids in tow, too few ingredients on hand, and chaos in the driver’s seat.

In my new book, Reclaiming Home, I devote a whole chapter to the table — to reclaiming our dinner hours to create authentic connection and deeper relationships.  We will talk about the HOW as well as the WHY.
